How much does gutter cleaning cost in Maryland?
Expect a professional gutter cleaning to run $119 to $234 for a typical home, with a published national average of $168. Two story homes land higher, around $180 to $360, and steep or three story roofs push past $400. Baltimore and DC figures run a little under the national numbers, and a heavy tree canopy or a long gap since the last cleaning moves the price up.

What does gutter cleaning cost by home size?
Most companies price by linear foot and by how high the ladder has to go. HomeAdvisor and This Old House both publish the same ladder: about $0.95 to $1.25 per foot for a one story home, $1.00 to $1.85 for two stories and $1.25 to $2.25 for three. The average house carries 125 to 200 feet of gutter.
| Home | Typical published cost |
|---|---|
| One story, 125–200 ft of gutter | $145–$250 |
| Two story | $180–$360 |
| Three story or steep roof | $210–$450 |
| Downspout flushing add-on | $50–$100 |
| Gutters not cleaned in years | add 10% to 50% |
A few other numbers frame the range. This Old House’s survey put the typical appointment at $191 to $529, with labor making up about 70% of the bill. Angi’s local pages list Baltimore at $149 on average, with most jobs between $111 and $188, and Washington DC at $143. One gutter guard company publishes a Maryland range of $187.50 to $562.50, though it does not explain the method behind it.
Why do Anne Arundel County gutters fill so fast?
Tree cover. The Chesapeake Bay Program’s canopy fact sheet puts tree cover at 59.5% of Anne Arundel County, and the older neighborhoods around Odenton, Crofton, Severna Park and Millersville sit under mature oaks, maples and tulip poplars. Add roughly 45 inches of rain a year at BWI, based on the National Weather Service monthly normals, and a clogged gutter overflows within a single storm.
Timing is the local wrinkle. The Maryland DNR’s foliage reports put peak color for Anne Arundel County around the first weekend of November and complete leaf drop by the end of the month. Red oaks and beech hang onto brown leaves into winter. A fall cleaning booked in October catches the maples and misses the oaks, so late November or early December is the better slot on oak streets.
Spring brings a second round. Maple seeds, oak tassels and pollen pack the trough in April and May, and the summer thunderstorms that follow are the heaviest rain of the year. Pine needles shed year round, so homes under pines often need a third visit.
What does a clogged gutter actually cost you?
Far more than the cleaning. When the trough is full, water sheets over the edge and lands at the foundation. This Old House lists foundation damage, roof leaks, siding stains and soil erosion as the common results of neglected gutters. Bob Vila adds that standing water in winter swells and cracks the gutter itself, and roof edges that stay wet start to rot.
| Problem | Published repair range |
|---|---|
| Gutter repair (reseal, rehang, downspout) | $195–$625, average $385 |
| Gutter replacement | $629–$1,735, average $1,181 |
| Fascia repair behind a sagging run | priced with the rehang; rotted boards get replaced |
| Water damage inside | $3.75–$7 per square foot of affected wall or floor |
The sag is the one to watch. Wet leaves are heavy, and a packed gutter pulls its hangers out of the fascia. This Old House notes that rehanging a sagging run often means repairing the fascia first, and rotted boards get replaced outright. That is where our siding and trim repair crew takes over from the cleaning crew.
Ice dams get blamed on gutters, but the root cause is attic heat melting roof snow that refreezes at the cold eave. State Farm’s guidance is that clean gutters will not stop a dam by themselves, but they let the melt drain instead of pooling. February is the snowiest month at BWI, at 7.5 inches on average, so a gutter still full of November leaves is a frozen block by then. When a dam pushes water under the shingles, the stain shows up on the ceiling below, and that becomes a water damage repair job.
Where can your downspouts drain in Anne Arundel County?
Not onto the street. County Code section 13-2-206 makes it illegal to discharge anything but naturally flowing rainwater onto a county road, and the Department of Public Works applies that to downspouts and sump pumps. The county asks owners to keep discharge at least ten feet from the property line along a street or sidewalk and suggests French drains, rain gardens and rain barrels for the runoff.
That matters on the older lots around Odenton and Glen Burnie, where a downspout often ends at a splash block pointed at the driveway. Redirecting it is a small job, and it usually gets handled during the cleaning visit.
What should you do next?
Count your stories, guess your gutter length and check the trees. A one story rancher with no overhanging trees needs one cleaning a year and should cost on the low end. A two story colonial under oaks needs two, with the fall visit after Thanksgiving. Bundle the downspout flush and any resealing into the same trip, since a second visit costs more than the add-on.
Our Maryland handyman cost guide explains how visit minimums work if you have other repairs to add. Call (877) 349-4632 with a photo of your roofline and the office can usually give you a range the same day. Bigger jobs get a free written estimate, and either way you know the number before anyone climbs a ladder.
